The Katydid Story
Katydid Accounting Solutions LLC is a small, remote-first accounting firm serving small businesses across the United States.
Why "Katydid"?
First of all, it's a play on my mother's name. I come from a family of seven children — six boys and one girl (don't feel sorry for my sister; she's the oldest and still bosses all of us around, like a good big sister should). One of my brothers tragically passed away with his wife and children in a freak train accident. Mom and Dad were dairy farmers all their lives until 2007, when we finally sold the herd. The amount of work and love that Dad — and Mom specifically — poured into us cannot be repaid in a dozen lifetimes. Mom's name is Katie Miller, and she is greatly loved by all of her children. Hence the name. As the saying goes: "If Katie hadn't, we wouldn't — Katydid!"
And in case you wonder: Mom is very much alive, and she can work circles around anyone I know. She is a dedicated strawberry farmer, and her greatest concern is, "Are you hungry? Here, let me fix you some food."
The first Katydid business to arise from the name was Katydid Farm. At Katydid Farm we have a small budding orchard, grow and sell strawberries, and sell tall grass to the hunting community for deer screening and bedding. (www.katydidfarmohio.com)
But the name carries a second meaning, too — the one our clients feel every day. Just like debugging software, we debug businesses: tracking down the small bugs hiding in your books, your processes, and your systems, and fixing them before they turn into big, expensive problems. My slogan is: "I work the bugs out of your accounting process." And no, I do not offer pest control — unless you consider QuickBooks a "pest." Then yes, I am your dedicated QB pest control. When we're done, you get to say: Katy did.
Meet Joe
I am Joe Miller — a husband to an amazing woman and a father of four wonderful kids. From owning and operating my own service-based business in North Dakota to managing the bookkeeping for a multitude of companies, I have over 15 years of accounting and bookkeeping experience working with many different industries. I've sat on both sides of the desk, and it shows in how we work.
What We Do
Our specialty is QuickBooks: setting it up right, debugging it when it's gone sideways, and training business owners and their staff to use it with confidence. Along the way, we also help businesses put better systems in place — from documented bookkeeping processes to industry-specific software that fits how they actually work.
We grew the way small businesses do — one good referral at a time. Most of our clients still find us through word of mouth, and that's something we're proud of. It means the work speaks for itself.
Our approach is practical and plain-spoken. No jargon, no upsells, no hundred-page reports — just clean books, clear processes, and honest advice about what your business needs.
And one thing to know up front: we don't file taxes. We'd rather focus on bookkeeping and business systems and do them well — and we're glad to work alongside your tax preparer so they have accurate books to prepare your tax returns.
